How to tell if it's R. Huber

  • Look for the shape first: rounded scoop and tub lounge chairs, swivel scoop chairs and matching sofas on solid teak frames.
  • Check for an original R. Huber tag. Some pieces still have it; many lost it over the years, so a missing tag does not rule a piece out.
  • Turn it over. A vintage piece shows its age in the frame and webbing. A modern Huber-style scoop chair is still built to order in Ontario, so a crisp new frame is a reproduction, not a vintage piece.
  • Listings often hedge with "attributed to R. Huber". That means the seller is going by the design, not a label.

About R. Huber

R. Huber & Co. made teak furniture in Toronto during the 1960s and 1970s. A reproduction maker dates the original Scoop chair to 1968. Its founder, factory and closing date are not well documented.

Its chairs and sofas are among the most recognisable Canadian mid-century seating. Many surviving pieces have been reupholstered, often in bouclé, velvet or leather.

Pieces to know

  • Scoop lounge chair (one listing gives it as Model 6300)
  • Swivel scoop chair
  • Tub lounge chair
  • Tub or "scoop" sofa

What makes one worth more

  • An original R. Huber tag still attached
  • A solid teak frame in sound condition
  • Pairs and matching sofa-and-chair sets
  • Original upholstery in good shape, or a quality reupholstery job

We price every piece from what comparable pieces have actually sold for, its condition and the work it needs. Damage is fine: we restore everything in our Edmonton shop.

Questions

Is my piece R. Huber?

Look for the rounded scoop or tub shape on a teak frame and any original R. Huber tag. Many lost their tags, so send us photos of the whole piece and underneath and we will tell you what we think.

What is an R. Huber piece worth?

It depends on the piece, its condition and recent sales of the same model. Send photos with the form on this page, including any label, and we will give you a real offer, usually within one business day.

Do you buy R. Huber furniture?

Yes. We buy R. Huber pieces anywhere in Alberta, damaged or not, and pick them up. We pay by e-transfer or cash before it leaves your home.
